COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This
one-hour course will present a new look at Geographic Atrophy, the late stage
of nonexudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The course will review pathophysiology, risk
factors, symptoms, and clinical presentation of AMD. Multimodal imaging and OCT
biomarkers will be presented. The new
complement inhibitors will be discussed, including efficacy and safety. Finally, a look at what treatments are on the
horizon will conclude the course. This lecture was recorded in July 2025 at our Victoria BC Conference.

• Accurately identify and categorize non-exudative AMD based on multimodal imaging findings.
• Understand modifiable risk factors and make appropriate recommendations to patients.
• Understand the efficacy and safety of the newly approved complement inhibitors in the management of geographic atrophy.
• Identify appropriate candidates for the complement inhibitors and counsel patients about appropriate expectations.

Danica J. Marrelli, OD, FAAO, AAO Diplomate (Glaucoma)
Danica Marrelli is the North Texas Study Group Clinical Professor at UHCO, where she serves as Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Director of the Ocular Diagnostic and Medical Eye Service. In the classroom, Dr. Marrelli teaches ocular pharmacology, glaucoma and case-based learning courses. Dr. Marrelli became a diplomate in the ocular disease section of the American Academy of Optometry in November 2009 and is the president of the Optometric Glaucoma Society. She serves on the Education Committee for the Glaucoma Research Foundation. She received the American Academy of Optometry Foundation’s Michael G. Harris Family Award for Excellence in Optometric Education in 2024.
