COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This lecture is all about the scope of practice and disease management, and it is tailored to the scope of practice in your state, whether it includes lasers, injections, oral medications or glaucoma management. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • To become familiar with and review the anatomy of the lids regarding ophthalmic surgery. 
  • To become familiar with glaucoma diagnostic tests and treatment options, including topical medications and surgical options.   
  • To become familiar with oral medications, including oral antibiotics and oral antivirals used in ocular disease conditions such as preseptal cellulitis, herpes zoster, among other conditions. 
  • To become familiar with injection techniques for use in eyelid procedures and chalazion management
  • To become familiar with the indications, contraindications, treatment protocols, complications, and follow-up with YAG laser capsulotomies. 
  • To become familiar with the indications, contraindications, treatment protocols, complications, and follow-up with peripheral iridotomies (PI).  
  • To become familiar with the indications, contraindications, treatment protocols, complications, and follow-up with selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

Dr. Nathan Lighthizer

Dr. Nathan (Nate) Lighthizer, born in Bismarck, North Dakota, is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry. He completed a Family Practice residency with an emphasis in Ocular Disease at Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry (NSUOCO), where he now serves as Associate Dean. 

He founded and leads NSU’s Dry Eye Clinic and is Chief of Specialty Care Clinics and Electrodiagnostics. A nationally recognized lecturer, Dr. Lighthizer specializes in advanced ophthalmic procedures, electrodiagnostics, and ocular disease. He is also a founding member and past president of the Intrepid Eye Society.
