COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This case-based presentation will provide an overview of ordering and interpreting blood labs when investigating possible underlying systemic and ocular etiologies.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Define the purpose and benefits of using blood analysis in diagnosing ocular and systemic diseases
- Identify when to use appropriate blood tests during clinical investigations
- Analyze and interpret blood laboratory report findings commonly associated with various systemic and ocular conditions

Breanne McGhee, OD, FAAO
Dr. Breanne McGhee is a full-time clinical optometrist in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she is a native. She obtained her Bachelor's in Science (B.S.) degree in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana. Upon graduation from Xavier, she continued on to Pacific University College of Optometry, where she obtained her professional degrees. She also earned the prestigious top honor, the Dean's Award, for her years of service and scholarship during her optometry school years.
She completed a Family Practice Optometry residency at Bond Wroten Eye Clinic in Louisiana, affiliated with the Southern College of Optometry. Later, she earned a Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). Dr. McGhee is a part-time assistant associate professor and clinical adjunct at Pacific University College of Optometry. She is also an active member of the Optometry Association of Louisiana (OAL), American Optometric Association (AOA), American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and National Optometric Association (NOA) where she serves on various committees. Dr. McGhee has authored several scientific posters and lectured on clinical presentations at various optometry conferences. Some of her clinical and professional work has been featured in the Review of Optometry, Optometry & Vision Journal, AOA Focus, and Women in Optometry.
In 2020, Dr. McGhee was the recipient of the Women In Optometry Young Optometrist of the Year Theia Award, as well as the Emerging Leader Award at Pacific University. In 2021 and 2022, Dr. McGhee was awarded the William C. Ezell Fellowship by the American Academy of Optometry Foundation. In 2024, Dr. McGhee was named the Young OD of the Year by the National Optometric Association (NOA) and received the Optometry Association of Louisiana’s President Award.
