COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course reviews non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), focusing on its pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and management. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing NAION from other optic neuropathies, including more life-threatening conditions, and on counseling patients regarding prognosis and preventive care.  This course was recorded at our NW Residents Conference in June 2026.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Diagnose NAION based on clinical features/findings.

• Initiate appropriate evaluation to rule out AAION.

• Manage systemic risk factors to reduce the risk of fellow-eye involvement.

• Understand the risk of NAION with certain systemic medications.
