COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This lecture will consider the epidemics of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy via a series of illustrative patient case examples. Accepted and novel strategies for prevention and treatment of both will be discussed.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Attendees will learn to integrate multiple case history and examination findings to develop treatment plans for a variety of diabetes patient presentations
• Attendees will be able to list systemic diabetes therapies that are proven to afford cardio-renal protection and for which patients they are most useful
• Attendees will be able to describe recent scientific evidence pointing to hypoglycemia as a major impetus for the development of severe diabetic retinal disease
• Attendees will be able to describe the practical application of anti-VEGF therapy for multiple presentations of diabetic retinal disease, as well as benefits of emerging therapies to extend the treatment interval
• Attendees will be able to deliver multifaceted, evidence-based patient education for primary prevention of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in optometric practice
• Attendees will be able to describe the novel use of both structural and functional retinal assessment technologies to better stage severity of diabetic retinal disease and make timely referral to retinal specialty

A. Paul Chous, MA, OD, FAAO
Dr. Chous emphasizes diabetes eye care and education. He is an Adjunct Professor of Optometry at Western University of Health Sciences, author of a book and more than 100 published papers on diabetes, a consultant to several eye care companies, and lectures both nationally and internationally at eye care conferences on diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and the role of nutrition in eye disease.
Dr. Chous is an editorial advisor to Review of Optometry and Optometry Times and has published clinical research in the prestigious British Journal of Ophthalmology. In 2017, he was named one of the 250 most influential optometrists in the United States.
