COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course covers the full spectrum of primary angle-closure disease - from risk stratification and gonioscopic technique to mechanism-directed treatment, including LPI, iridoplasty, and lens-based surgery with MIGS. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for identifying occludable angles, interpreting anterior segment OCT, and applying current trial evidence to individualized patient management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Recognize the global prevalence and demographic risk factors of primary angle closure disease, including populations at highest risk of underdiagnosis.
• Interpret anterior segment OCT and gonioscopic findings to accurately classify angle anatomy and closure mechanism.
• Select mechanism-directed treatment strategies for primary angle closure disease, incorporating current trial evidence and surgical options including lens-based surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

Getting to know our speakers
Faran Vafaie BSc MSc OD
Dr. Vafaie is an optometrist and partner practicing at the Prism Eye Institute with a special focus on glaucoma, complex anterior segment, and surgical management. He received his optometry degree from the University of Waterloo as well as his Master of Science in Biochemistry at Western University. He has offered time as an adjunct clinical instructor for fourth-year University of Waterloo Optometry students on their ocular disease rotations and Family Medicine residents from McMaster University.
He has spoken at numerous continuing education conferences and provides consulting services to industry on topics ranging from perioperative care, advanced glaucoma management, intraocular lens designs and complex anterior segment disease.
He has also developed a collaborative comanagement model at the Prism Eye Institute, working hand in hand with glaucoma specialists, retina specialists and general ophthalmologists in providing better access to care for patients.
