The Friday Afternoon Emergency
COPE #105970-GO
Event #13392
Expiration Date: 7/24/2029
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course walks through a wide spectrum of urgent presentations, from red eye and elevated IOP to sudden vision loss and papilledema, using a practical triage framework to guide decisions about who to manage, who to refer, and who to send to emergency. Attendees will leave with greater confidence in the urgent care decisions that define the Friday afternoon walk-in emergency.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Apply a structured triage framework to categorize urgent ocular presentations as appropriate for optometric management, urgent ophthalmology referral, or emergency department transfer.
• Recognize the clinical features and time-sensitive management priorities of high-stakes presentations including retinal detachment, acute angle closure, ischemic optic neuropathy, and globe ruptures.
• Develop a systematic approach to the urgent red eye, sudden vision loss, diplopia, and elevated IOP - distinguishing benign from sight- or life-threatening etiologies through case-based reasoning.
This presentation was recorded at the Victoria, BC Conference in July 2026. The conference received unrestricted educational grant support from Alcon & Sun Pharma.
