COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Myopia management has become a large part of primary care. With the rapid expansion of available modalities, it can be difficult for practitioners to stay up to date. This lecture aims to provide an overview of available myopia control options, looking at the pros and cons of each while also discussing which patients may be the best, or worst, candidates for each choice. Attention will be paid to the mechanisms of preventing myopia onset and progression so that
attendees can be better prepared to educate patients and parents.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Describe development of myopia, reviewing risks for pediatric myopia, the concept of pre-myopia, and potential preventive measures
• Explore theories of how myopia control modalities may have their effects
• Overview efficacy of currently available methods of myopia control, such as atropine, multifocal soft lenses, orthokeratology, and special spectacles
• Explore potential advantages and drawbacks of each myopia control modality
• Discuss patient education on myopia control, from enrollment to follow-up scheduling
• Discuss clinical testing to perform at progress checks, from accommodation to cycloplegic evaluation and axial length measurements

Getting to know our speakers
Aaron Salzano, OD, FAAO, FCOVD
Dr. Salzano is an Assistant Professor at Pacific University College of Optometry. Following a residency in Pediatric Optometry and Vision Therapy at Marshall B. Ketchum University (SCCO), he practiced pediatric optometry, vision therapy, and primary care in Albany, Oregon, before joining the faculty at Pacific. He participates in clinical research with the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) and looks forward to expanding his research within pediatrics, vision therapy, and sports vision.
Dr. Salzano is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO), a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD), and serves as a member of the American Optometric Association's Sports & Performance Vision Committee.
