COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The following interactive presentation will explore the various lab testing used in the diagnosis of systemic conditions that have associated manifestations in the eye and ocular structures. Common ocular conditions and the associated systemic diseases will be reviewed with an emphasis on what tests should be ordered and what the optometric physician should know once the results are back.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the lab testing and interpretation of results for patient who have endocrine disorders (e.g. diabetes, thyroid)
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the complete blood count and the ocular conditions that warrant this being ordered.
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the lab testing and interpretation of results for a patient presenting with a uveitis with an infectious etiology (e.g. tuberculosis, syphilis)
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the lab testing and interpretation of results for a patient presenting with a granulomatous uveitis with an emphasis on sarcoid.
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the lab testing and interpretation of results for a patient presenting with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) e.g. gonorrhea and chlamydia
  • Upon completion of this course the attendee will be familiar with the lab testing and interpretation of results for a patient presenting with autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, lupus)

Dr. Blair Lonsberry

Dr. Lonsberry grew up in Rossburn, Manitoba (Canada). He obtained his Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo in 1996 after completing a Master of Science in Physiology from the University of Manitoba. He completed his residency in Primary Care Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1997, then joined the faculty at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. During his time at SCO, he completed a Masters in Education degree with an emphasis in adult learning.

Currently, Dr. Lonsberry is a Full Professor with Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon. Dr. Lonsberry is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, the Optometric Retinal Society, the Optometric Glaucoma Society, and the Ocular Surface Society of Optometry.
