COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A crucial part of any optometric practice is the ability to manage patients who present with an acute onset red eye. Viral infections represent a majority of the underlying cause for patients developing red eyes. In this presentation, the major forms of viral infections including adenovirus, herpes simplex, and herpes zoster will be explored. The key characteristics of how patients present, the diagnostic testing, and the latest treatment/management options including the use of oral and topical medications will be discussed. In addition, the presentation will explore the rare but potentially sight-threatening development of a fungal infection and what is currently available in the management of these challenging infections.

• The attendee will be familiar with the diagnosis and management of a patient with pharyngeal conjunctival fever (PCF) infection.
• The attendee will be familiar with the diagnosis and management of a patient with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) infection.
• The attendee will be familiar with the diagnosis and management of a patient who has developed herpes zoster with or without ophthalmic involvement.
• The attendee will be familiar with the diagnosis and management of a patient with herpes simplex virus infection.
• The attendee will be familiar with the various topical and oral treatment options available for the management of viral and fungal infections.
• The attendee will be familiar with the diagnosis and management of a patient with a fungal ocular infection.
