COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will explore a variety of clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges, participants will learn to navigate the intricacies of optic neuropathies with confidence and precision.



LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


1. Recognize the value of ancillary diagnostic and imaging tests in differentiating true papilledema from pseudopapilledema

2. List differential diagnoses for bilateral disc edema other than idiopathic intracranial hypertension

3. Be able to utilize clinical exam clues to aid in differentiating non-arteritic from arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy and be familiar with lab testing for giant cell arteritis

4. Become familiar with exam findings that should raise suspicion for a non-glaucomatous cause of optic neuropathy

5. Become familiar with the neuroimaging protocol that should be ordered following an initial episode of optic neuritis and it’s prognostic value in determining a patient’s future risk of clinically definite multiple sclerosis

6. Describe visual field patterns consistent with chiasmal compression from a sellar tumor

Dr. Carolyn Majcher

 Carolyn Majcher is a Doctor of Optometry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Optometric Retina Society. She received her Doctorate of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University and completed an ocular disease residency at the Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Following completion of her residency, Dr. Majcher served as Chief of the Retinal Disease Clinic and an Assistant Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry for 8 years. In 2019 she joined the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry as an Associate Professor and the Director of Residency Programs.
